Email newsletters are a great way of staying in touch with existing customers or prospects who want to hear more about your company and your products.

In and out

You can't go sending email out willy-nilly to any email address so you need to provide a sign-up facility on your web site for people to request that you send them your newsletter.  Obviously this also implies an opt-out facility too.

A powerful medium

Newsletter marketing is very different to website marketing.  A newsletter is a much more personal experience delivered, as it is, into your mailbox.  For this reason recipients have a much more emotional reaction to them.  This could be a good thing, creating a strong bond between the recipient and the company, or a bad thing depending on the emotion you engender.

Be quick about it

Newsletters therefore must be designed to allow the reader to glean the key information as quickly as possible.  Only a very small proportion of newsletters are ever read thoroughly and many are never even opened.

This last fact requires the subject of the newsletter to be as pithy and to the point as the content.
