You might have noticed on many websites some small ads for other companies' products and services under a heading 'Ads by Google'. These ads are placed there by Google automatically and are selected according to certain pre-defined criteria. Then, when someone clicks on the ad to go to the advertiser's website, the publisher of the ad gets some commission from Google.

A choice

The major search engines each run a similar service:

• from Google is called AdSense
• Yahoo! call it the Yahoo! Publisher Network
• Microsoft's is called Microsoft adCenter Content Ads (currently an invitation-only pilot)
